The final gala of the Fifth National Contest of the Polish Information Processing Society (PTI) for the best theses and engineering projects in computer science was held at NASK headquarters. The prizes, funded by NASK, were presented by Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski and Dr. Radosław Nielek, Director of the Institute. NASK Science scientists gave lectures to the prize winners and PTI experts present.

PTI’s prestigious competition for the best theses and engineering projects in computer science once again attracted many talented young engineers from all over the country. The competition committee, which included representatives of the IT industry and academics, including Dr. Anna Felkner of the NASK Research and Development Center, decided to award:

  • 1st prize (in the amount of PLN 17,000) to the thesis authored by Bartłomiej Baut entitled Signatures in the Air as a New Method of Authenticating Individuals and Securing Data in a Digital World (Wrocław University of Technology, Faculty of Informatics and Telecommunications, Supervisor: Wojciech Wodo, Ph.D.);
  • 2nd prize (in the amount of PLN 12,000) to the thesis authored by Ignacy Stępka, Łukasz Sztukiewicz and Michał Wiliński entitled DetoxAI: Improving Fairness in Neural Networks via Concept Unlearning (Poznań University of Technology, Faculty of Informatics and Telecommunications, Supervisor: prof. dr. hab. inż. Jerzy Stefanowski);
  • 3rd prize (in the amount of PLN 6,000) for the work authored by Maciej Szefler, Filip Krawczak, Damian Jankowski and Kacper Karski titled Neural Networks for Respiratory Rhythm Analysis (Gdańsk University of Technology, Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, Supervisor: Julian Szymanski, Ph.D.)

The committee also awarded two honorable mentions to the following theses:

  • Tymoteusz Kwieciński, Jakub Grzywaczewski and Mateusz Nizwantowski titled PvSTATEMPackage: Package for Automatic Preprocessing of Serological Data (Warsaw University of Technology, Faculty of Mathematics and Information Sciences, Supervisor: Prof. Przemysław Biecek, PhD);
  • Taras Zhyhulin titled Integration of High-Performance Computing Simulation Platform with Data Sharing Repositorie (AGH University of Technology, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics, Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering, Supervisor: Bartłomiej Śnieżyński, Ph.D.)

An important element of the gala were lectures given by employees of NASK’s Research and Development Center, who talked about the work carried out at NASK Science, as well as introduced the gala participants to important issues related to cybersecurity and responsible development of artificial intelligence technology. Ewelina Bartuzi-Trokielewicz, Ph.D., from the Department of Audiovisual Analysis and Biometric Systems, talked about the threats posed by the development of deepfake technology and synthetic data, showing a number of examples of Internet fraud, as well as the methods of how criminals operate. Jan Dubiński of the Department of Security and Transparency of Artificial Intelligence, in turn, talked about the protection of intellectual property of models and data in the era of large generative models, showing methods that can help increase the protection of models from unlawful use.

We sincerely congratulate all the winners and keep our fingers crossed for their further professional and scientific development!
